Developing standardised 2.5 kW and 250 W, bi-directional, 15 years lifetime inductive subsea couplers

Introducing the next generation of inductive subsea couplers commercialised by SubseaUSB

Imagine a world where the USB standard did not exist and each equipment provider (mouse, keyboard, etc.) had a proprietary connector instead of the USB interface with different power and data transfer requirements – the system interoperability would be so poor that it would prevent users from using computers efficiently and limit the ICT market growth. In the subsea world, inductive couplers are not standardised and produced to a specific project. Since these are project-adapted deliveries, the product specifications change from one delivery to the next, resulting in poor interoperability between equipment.

To solve this challenge SubseaUSB decided to design the next generation of inductive subsea couplers based on an open standard.

  • We donated our inductive subsea connectors technical information to SWiG, Subsea Wireless Group allowing for interchangeability and interoperability, the intention is to form and establish the first international subsea standard for inductive power transfer.
  • SubHub together with Equinor started the development of the qualified 2.5 kW and 250 W, bi-directional, 15 years lifetime inductive subsea couplers.

This next generation of inductive couplers are made to be compatible with for the underwater intervention drone charging station commercialised by Blue Logic AS whom has in 2020 won the ONS innovation award for its development of an open-standard subsea docking station for underwater vehicles.
